The low, wood-beamed building stands at the foot of the Ngong Hills, which rise behind it as they do in her writing. The museum preserves the house as it was when she left, with furniture she used and photographs from the farm.

The house was built in 1912 and bought by Blixen and her husband in 1917. Their coffee farm failed; she stayed on alone after their divorce until returning to Denmark in 1931. The Danish government later gave the house to Kenya as an independence gift, and it became a museum in 1986 after the film Out of Africa renewed interest in her life here.

Guided tours run continuously through the day, taking you room by room with the story of the farm and its owner. A nature trail loops through the garden, where labeled trees help identify species and birdwatchers may spot hyraxes in the branches. The museum shop sells copies of Blixen's books, including Out of Africa, and handicrafts by local artists.

The house is ten kilometers from central Nairobi, on Karen Road in the suburb named after her.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0829/8256/8156/files/karen-blixen-museum-museum-karen-rd-nairobi-kenya-01.webp?v=1783191432
