You stay at Namib Desert Lodge where the ancient dunes have fossilised into rock, their red and gold layers stacked like pages in a book. The lodge is built at their base, so the rooms look out over grassy savannah or the dune faces themselves. Each has a veranda, air conditioning, and an en-suite shower — simple, clean spaces to return to after a day in the desert.

Two pools sit in the lodge grounds, their water a shock of blue against the sand. A waterhole draws gemsbok and other desert animals at dusk, visible from the bar. The restaurant serves meals with a view of the dunes turning colour in the late light.

Guides take you out at dawn or sunset to drive the fossil dunes, reading the desert for tracks and small life. You can walk the trails alone or join a night walk with UV lights to spot scorpions and nocturnal beetles. The lodge also runs trips to Sossusvlei, an hour’s drive south, where the dunes are still loose sand and tower over the plain.

The lodge is sixty kilometres north of Sesriem, far enough from the park gates to be quiet when the day visitors leave.
