The Balmoral

The Balmoral is a ninety-five-room hotel on Durban's beachfront, where Marine Parade meets the Indian Ocean. You wake to the sound of waves and the view of swimmers heading for the water. The building keeps its historic façade but has been renovated inside, with rooms equipped for both business and holiday stays. Families take the executive rooms with sofa beds; couples and solo travellers choose the sea-facing doubles.

The hotel's Halaal restaurant serves meals on a forty-metre terrace that looks out over the beach promenade. Durban's subtropical weather means the terrace is busy year-round, with guests lingering over breakfast or evening drinks. Ushaka Marine World is a short walk away, and the city's convention centre is minutes by car.

The beach is the reason to stay here. You step out of the hotel onto the sand, with the Indian Ocean warm enough for swimming most of the year. The promenade runs for kilometres in either direction, busy with joggers and cyclists in the early morning.
