south-africa-kwazulu-natal-durban-botanic-gardens
Durban Botanic Gardens

You walk through fifteen hectares of botanic gardens in Durban, the oldest surviving in Africa. Established in 1849, the gardens hold collections of cycads, palms, and orchids — some specimens planted when the garden was new. The Tropical Display House shows orchids from more than seventy-five genera, grown in shade houses nearby and rotated for display. The cycad collection includes Encephalartos woodii, a species now extinct in the wild, brought here from Ngoye forest in the early 1900s.

Paths wind past a lake formed by a spring, where aquatic birds gather, and through an arboretum of trees over a hundred years old. The Sunken Garden, built in the 1930s by unemployed workers during the Great Depression, keeps its English style with annuals and perennials. A butterfly habitat garden, planted to attract local species, sits under a dome near the lake.

You can join a guided tour by golf cart, or bring a picnic to spread on the lawns. The gardens are open daily; the coffee stand at the visitor complex serves takeaway drinks. The oldest palm in the garden dates to 1873.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0829/8256/8156/files/durban-botanic-gardens-botanical-garden-berea-durban-south-africa-01.webp?v=1783186286
