south-africa-mossel-bay-cape-st-blaize-lighthouse-complex
Cape St Blaize Lighthouse Complex

The Cape St Blaize Lighthouse has stood on its rocky bluff since 1864, still guiding ships into Mossel Bay with its light visible fifteen nautical miles out. You can climb the tower for views over the bay, where dolphins sometimes surface below. The lighthouse holds a restaurant with indoor and patio seating — coffee, lunch, drinks — looking out to where the waves break against the rocks.

Two guest rooms let you stay in the lighthouse itself, with private balconies facing the water. The rooms share one modern bathroom between them; a separate house next door sleeps six. From the windows you watch the dassies (rock hyrax) scurry over the cliffs and gulls wheel past the tower.

The lighthouse was built from local sandstone, cut from quarries on the bluff. Its fog signal has changed four times since 1914, from explosive charges to today's electric nautophone. The restaurant occupies what were once the keeper's quarters, where John Armstrong lit the first lamp in 1864 for ninety pounds a year.

Footpaths lead down past Cape St Blaize Cave to rocky viewpoints along the coast. The lighthouse remains a working aid to navigation, its beam sweeping over the bay each night as it has for a hundred and sixty years.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0829/8256/8156/files/cape-st-blaize-lighthouse-complex-tourist-attraction-2-montagu-st-mossel-bay-south-africa-01.webp?v=1783195730
