The garden is free to enter, maintained by the City of Cape Town and the Friends of the Arderne Gardens, a volunteer group.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFour trees here are designated Champion Trees, a national recognition for their size or rarity. The Aleppo Pine may be the largest of its kind in the world. Paths wind through the property, past benches and clearings where visitors picnic or take wedding photos. Dogs are allowed on leashes; alcohol and loud music are not.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe garden was established in the mid-19th century by Ralph Arderne, an English immigrant who collected species from around the world. It is now a Provincial Heritage Site. Security patrols the grounds, and donations at the gate support the volunteers’ work.
