Mama Africa, Cape Town South Africa

Mama Africa is a Pan-African restaurant on Long Street that has served food with live music since 1995. It was Cape Town's first authentic Pan-African restaurant, built to celebrate the continent's diversity through cuisine and performance.

The kitchen serves dishes inspired by cultures across Africa, while marimba bands play in the afternoons and evenings. Traditional dancers perform on some nights, and guests can join drum circles. The handwashing ritual at the start of the meal signals hospitality.

Long Street's nightlife passes by the windows as the marimbas play inside. The restaurant takes up a full building on the street, with space for bands to move between tables. You eat surrounded by the sound of wooden keys being struck and the smell of grilled meats from the kitchen.

The entertainment schedule runs nightly, with different acts each evening. The marimba band plays every day, while gumboot dancers appear on weekends.
