You eat at Old Bridge Restaurant & Bar beside the 1845 sandstone bridge over the Lourens River — the third oldest surviving bridge in South Africa, built with stone from Table Mountain. The tavern serves pizzas, burgers, pasta and steaks indoors or at outdoor tables along the riverbank, where you can watch the water pass under the bridge's two arches.

The kitchen makes ribs, baskets and homemade dishes, with daily specials for diners. The bar runs happy hours from four to seven in the evening, showing live sport on multiple screens. A large braai stands ready in the outdoor area for group bookings and functions.

The bridge itself was built in 1845 to carry military traffic between Cape Town and outposts beyond the Hottentots-Holland mountains. It was decommissioned in 1938 when a new bridge opened downstream, but the stonework remains as a provincial heritage site. You can still see the 1952 hoofprints left by a horse cart that crossed wet concrete during a tercentenary celebration.

No pets are allowed except service animals. The tavern is in Somerset West, at the corner of Gordon and Main Road.
