Snoekies
Snoekies is a seafood takeaway in Hout Bay, serving fish and chips since the 1930s. You order at the counter and eat outside, with the harbour nearby. The menu focuses on hake, snoek, and calamari, served with chips and rolls. Family meals include seafood platters and fisherman’s baskets.
The place began as a converted bus at the end of Harbour Road, where Hans Mickeleit and his wife served local fishermen. By 1956, demand for their smoked snoek led to a factory in the harbour. The business changed hands in 1959, but the takeaway remains.
Today, the menu still features the same staples: hake fillets, smoked snoek, and calamari, with tartare or peri-peri sauce on the side. The original location at the far end of Hout Bay Harbour still operates, along with other outlets in Cape Town. You eat from paper parcels, as fishermen have done here for decades.
