south-africa-western-cape-west-coast-fossil-park
West Coast Fossil Park

The West Coast Fossil Park holds fossils from five million years ago, when sabre-tooth cats, short-necked giraffes, and African bears roamed what is now the Western Cape. The fossils were uncovered during phosphate mining in the mid-20th century, and the site was later declared a National Heritage Site to preserve the finds.

You can see the dig site where fossils are still being uncovered, including remains of the large giraffe-like Sivatherium hendeyi left in place for viewing. A Pliocene garden recreates the subtropical plants that grew here millions of years ago, based on fossil pollen evidence. The Sivathere Hall uses life-size sculptures and digital art to depict the ancient landscape, including the Berg River as it flowed into a higher sea level at Saldanha Bay.

The park is about an hour and a half drive from Cape Town, near Langebaanweg. Guided tours run several times a day, and the site includes walking trails. Children under three enter free, and the park is closed on Mondays.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0829/8256/8156/files/west-coast-fossil-park-heritage-preservation-w-coast-fossil-park-west-coast-peninsula-south-africa-01.webp?v=1783213680
