Paula's Place, Harare Zimbabwe

Paula's Place is a Portuguese charcoal-grill restaurant on Samora Machel Avenue in Harare. The kitchen cooks over imported charcoal — whole chickens, prawns from Beira, and hake fillets over the coals. The piri-piri chicken is marinated in a house tempero and grilled whole, half or quarter; the seafood includes crumbed calamari and prawns in garlic butter.

The menu runs from Portuguese chouriço sausage to trinchado (cubed steak with onions), with sides of chips, rice or boiled potatoes. Desserts are made in-house: crème caramel, chocolate mousse, cheesecake. The wine list leans South African and Portuguese; corkage applies if you bring your own.

The restaurant opened in 2011 after Paula ran Cascais for sixteen years. It keeps generator-backed freezers at minus five degrees for the prawns, and takes chickens only from registered farms. You can buy marinated uncooked chickens to take away, or vouchers for the deli shop.
