Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge, Ol Tukai Kenya

You stay at Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge in ninety-two rooms built in the style of a Maasai manyatta, each with hand-painted wildlife murals and a private balcony facing the plains. The lodge sits inside Amboseli National Park, where elephants move through acacia groves with Kilimanjaro as the backdrop.

Game drives go out twice daily — mornings for lion tracks, evenings when the light turns gold on the mountain. The guides know where the herds gather; you may see elephants at the springs or giraffes browsing the whistling thorns. Back at the lodge, the pool is shaded by palms, and the restaurant serves buffet meals with Kenyan dishes and a view of the water garden.

Bush dinners are set under acacia trees with Maasai warriors performing by firelight. The lodge has planted over six million trees in the area since 1991, and in 2018 it became the second fully solar-powered property in the Serena group. The spa offers treatments drawing on African healing traditions, and the conference room holds one hundred delegates for meetings with a view of the mountain.

Kilimanjaro is the reason the lodge is here. It draws the wildlife and shapes the light, and it is visible from most rooms when the clouds clear.
