Cape Cross Lodge

You stay at Cape Cross Lodge for the seals. The lodge sits on Namibia's Skeleton Coast, three kilometers from one of the world's largest colonies of Cape fur seals — two hundred thousand animals on the rocks, with pups born in November and December. The colony draws kelp gulls, cormorants, and predators like jackals and hyenas at dusk.

The lodge is a stop on the route between Swakopmund and the Kunene Region, with sea-facing rooms and a restaurant that looks out over the Atlantic. Excursions run to the seal colony, shipwrecks along the coast, and the Messum Crater, an ancient volcanic formation in the desert. The lichen fields near the crater are fragile — they grow one millimeter a year — and the lodge advises staying on marked tracks to avoid damaging them.

A replica of the cross erected by Portuguese explorer Diogo Cao in 1486 stands near the seal reserve. The original marked the spot for European ships; now it marks the edge of the colony's territory. The lodge is a base for the coast, the desert, and the animals that live between them.
