You eat seafood at The Tug in a repurposed tugboat wheelhouse on Swakopmund beach, close enough to the Atlantic that you can hear the waves. The kitchen focuses on local catches — Kingklip, West Coast Sole, oysters cultivated in Walvis Bay — and serves them with a selection of South African wines. The menu changes regularly but keeps dishes like John Dory Goujons with homemade tartar sauce and crispy Kingklip burgers.

The wheelhouse comes from the Danie Hugo, a steam-powered tugboat built in Scotland in 1959. It was decommissioned in 1984, and its wheelhouse was moved to Swakopmund in 1992 to become the restaurant’s centrepiece. The dining room sits around it, with windows looking out over the beach and the water.

The restaurant offers a shuttle service for pick-up and drop-off in Swakopmund, running daily from late afternoon to evening. You can hear the waves from the table, and the shuttle lets you leave the car at home.
