You stay at Twyfelfontein Country Lodge in Damaraland, where fifty-six rooms are built against red sandstone mountains — half face the desert plains, half the mountains. The lodge uses natural stone and thatch to blend into the rock. At night, spotlights light the cliffs; by day, you join guided drives into the dry Aba-Huab River valley to look for desert-adapted elephants, antelope, and welwitschia plants.

Field guides lead the drives, tracking elephant herds and stopping at geological formations like the Organ Pipes, vertical dolerite pillars formed by ancient lava. Back at the lodge, the deck looks over the Huab Valley to distant mountains. Rooms have ceiling fans, mosquito nets, and safes; the luxury suite adds a private pool and terrace.

Other activities include guided hikes at sunrise or sunset, and visits to rock engravings made by early inhabitants. The lodge sits in a landscape shaped by volcanic activity, where dry riverbeds and savannah lowlands hold wildlife adapted to the desert. Jackals call at night; by day, the heat draws elephants to the valley.
