Fouriesburg Country Inn

You stay at Fouriesburg Country Inn for the quiet of the eastern Free State and the view of the Maluti Mountains from the veranda. The town sits at the junction of two regional roads, with the Lesotho border ten kilometers away at Caledon’s Poort. The inn serves as a base for visits to nearby cherry orchards, where you can pick fruit in season and taste cherry liqueur made from local harvests.

The dining room plates straightforward country meals, and the bar pours local beers. In winter, electric blankets warm the beds; in summer, ceiling fans stir the air. Rooms open onto a shared veranda where you can sit with coffee and watch the light change on the sandstone cliffs.

Fouriesburg is a small town, and the inn is part of its rhythm — close enough to walk the streets, far enough to hear the quiet. The surrounding highlands draw photographers and hikers, with trails leading into the mountains. In winter, Afriski resort in Lesotho is ninety minutes’ drive away for those who want to ski.

The cherry orchards define the area. German missionaries brought the first trees in the early 1900s, and today the Free State grows five hundred hectares of cherries, concentrated around Fouriesburg, Ficksburg, and Clocolan. The harvest season peaks in November.
