Imbizo Shisanyama @ Mall of Thembisa, Thembisa South Africa

You eat grilled meat at Imbizo Shisanyama in the Mall of Thembisa, a three-level restaurant space that opened in 2020. The kitchen prepares township-style dishes over open flames, with pap and chakalaka as standard accompaniments. The restaurant group began in 1997 when founder Rita Zwane started serving food from a shipping container in Ivory Park.

The Mall of Thembisa branch continues the tradition of communal dining, with tables arranged for groups. Since 2002, the restaurant has hosted annual Heritage Day celebrations featuring Maskandi musicians and traditional dancers — the event now draws over ten thousand attendees at Rabie Ridge Stadium.

The restaurant also hosts private events, from birthday parties to corporate functions, with a dedicated events team. Local suppliers provide ingredients where possible, continuing the founder's emphasis on community involvement. The space includes areas for live music performances, maintaining the original venue's role as a gathering place.

The Mall of Thembisa location sits at the intersection of Aluminium Drive and Olifantsfontein Road, with parking available in the mall complex.
