The Iron Restaurant
You eat at The Iron Restaurant on Emfuleni Golf Estate in Vanderbijlpark, forty-five minutes from Johannesburg. The kitchen serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with a fusion menu that draws on chef William Carolissen’s twenty-five years in South African kitchens. Dishes change with what works — the menu has no fixed style beyond what the chef judges to be good.
The dining room looks out over the golf course, with outdoor tables on the lawns for meals in the sun. Inside, smaller tables suit private dinners; larger ones take families. The wine list pulls from South African vineyards, and the bar mixes cocktails to order.
Chef Carolissen trained at Granger Bay Hotel School in Cape Town and has worked with several noted South African chefs. His menu shifts with the season and the kitchen’s judgement of what is working. The restaurant shares the estate with a driving range and a halfway house for golfers, but the kitchen here is separate, cooking full meals rather than snacks.
The golf course is the reason the restaurant is here at all — it opened to serve players and now draws diners from Johannesburg for the food as much as the setting.
