Nambiti Big 5 Private Game Reserve

You visit Nambiti Big 5 Private Game Reserve for the Big 5 — lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo — on twenty-three thousand acres of bushveld in KwaZulu-Natal. The reserve is malaria-free, with ten lodges set across the landscape, each offering morning and evening game drives led by rangers. The terrain includes grasslands, riverine bush, and thornveld, supporting over forty species of game, including cheetah, giraffe, and zebra.

Conservation is central to the reserve. An anti-poaching unit monitors wildlife around the clock, with rhinos de-horned and tracked twenty-four hours a day. A portion of guest fees funds this work, along with rhino breeding and relocation programmes. The reserve also supports local communities, with over three hundred jobs created and community representatives on the board.

The reserve was restored from six cattle farms in 2000, with over one hundred kilometres of conservation fencing erected and more than forty species reintroduced. Today, it balances wildlife protection with tourism, offering lodges that range from family-friendly to luxury. The Drakensberg Mountains are an hour away, and the historic battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal are nearby.

Game drives run twice daily, with rangers tracking wildlife across the reserve. The terrain is varied — open plains, riverine bush, and thornveld — and the dry winter months bring animals closer to waterholes, making sightings more frequent.
