Zwakala Brewery, Magoebaskloof South Africa

Zwakala Brewery sits five kilometers down Cheerio Road in Magoebaskloof, where it has been making craft beer with pure mountain water since 2016. The water comes from the Broederstroom River, and the brewery credits it for the crisp taste of their lagers and ales. In 2019 their Limpopo Lager won Best Light Beer in the country.

The brewery is open on weekends. You can try their beers on draft, including seasonal brews like the Weekend Special, a white IPA with lemongrass that won Beer of the Year in 2022. The space is casual, with room for groups and families. The area around the brewery offers trout fishing in the Broederstroom River and hiking trails through the Woodbush Forest.

Zwakala means 'come closer' in local vernacular, and the brewery leans into the communal spirit of the region. The Tooley family, who run the place, also manage a nearby retreat with cabins for overnight stays. The brewery is a stop for those exploring Magoebaskloof’s backroads and forests.
