Cattle Baron Mossel Bay
You eat at Cattle Baron Mossel Bay for the beef — aged twenty-eight days, cut in-house, and grilled over flame. The kitchen’s signature is the Chateaubriand, a fillet steak flambéed tableside with brandy, served with mushroom sauce and béarnaise. Other cuts include rump, sirloin, and ribeye, all basted with the restaurant’s own seasoning salt.
The menu stretches to seafood, poultry, and vegetarian dishes, but the focus is on meat. The Carpetbagger steak is stuffed with mussels and cheddar or bacon and feta; the Fat Tuesday is a six-hundred-gram sirloin. Side dishes include creamed spinach, deep-fried onion rings, and bone marrow with herb butter.
The restaurant sits in Langeberg Mall, a shopping center off the N1 highway. Families use the kiddies’ room; sports fans watch games on the plasma TVs. Sunday brings a lunch buffet. The owners, David and Connie Nel, took over the location after years as regulars — they liked the place enough to buy it.
