Delheim Wine Estate, Stellenbosch South Africa

You visit Delheim for wine grown on the southwestern slopes of the Simonsberg, where the family has farmed since 1939. The vineyards climb the mountain, planted in decomposed granite soils that drain water to a clay layer below — a terroir that shapes the wine. The tasting room pours current vintages, and the garden restaurant serves meals with a view back toward the vines.

The estate keeps eighty-nine hectares of its land as a conservation area, protecting the Boland Granite fynbos that grows naturally between the vineyard blocks. This fynbos corridor system, planted alongside the vines, provides habitat for birds and insects while reducing the need for chemical sprays in the vineyard.

The winery is family-run, now in its third generation. You can taste the current releases in the tasting room, or book ahead for a meal at the garden restaurant, where the tables look out over the vineyards to the mountain beyond. The kitchen uses local produce, and the wine list naturally favors the estate’s own bottles.

The road in passes through the vineyards, climbing gently toward the tasting room and restaurant at the top. The drive from central Stellenbosch takes about fifteen minutes.
