Newport Market & Deli is a sourdough bakery and delicatessen on Beach Road in Mouille Point, opened in 1997 by Allan and Briony Schapiro. What began as a corner deli now includes a sit-down restaurant, a bakery turning out artisanal sourdough loaves, and a counter stocked with cold meats and cheeses — some imported, some local. The kitchen makes muesli biscuits and other baked goods on-site, using recipes developed over the years.

The deli shelves hold groceries, confectionery and homewares alongside the food counter, while a juice and smoothie bar serves drinks to take away or have at the table. The menu is built around fresh, simple fare — bread from the bakery, meats from the deli case — with no complicated preparations. You can eat quickly here, but the food is made from scratch.

Over twenty-five years the staff has grown from four to more than sixty, and the original corner shop has expanded into a Cape Town fixture. The sourdough loaves, baked daily, still follow the same methods as in 1997.
