You eat at On the Edge Restaurant beside Stony Point Nature Reserve in Betty's Bay, where the kitchen plates fresh seafood — hake fried or grilled, calamari, prawns in garlic sauce — with views across the reserve. Since opening in 2014 under CapeNature and passing to community management in 2015, the restaurant has reinvested profits into local youth programs.

The seafood comes battered or grilled, with chips or salad. Summer platters for two combine hake, calamari, prawns and mussels with rice. Burgers come with sweet chili sauce or guacamole; toasted sandwiches include bacon and egg or cheesy biltong. Breakfast runs until half past eleven, with omelettes and waffles topped with salmon or maple syrup.

The building sits near the penguin colony at Stony Point, so you may hear the birds from the tables. What makes the place work is the community model: local staff run the kitchen and floor, and the profits fund skills development in the area. The attached Eco Centre Space hosts small events and workshops, continuing the reinvestment.

You bring your own wine, which keeps the bill down, and the portions are large enough that many take leftovers home.
