Travalia Guest Farm, Beaufort West South Africa

You stay at Travalia Guest Farm on a working Karoo farm five hundred metres from the N1, near Beaufort West. The farm raises sheep, cattle, and game like kudu and springbok, and the on-site butchery supplies lamb chops, beef, and venison to guests and passing trade. Rooms are in the main farmhouse or in standalone chalets, all with air conditioning, DSTV, and bar fridges; some have kitchenettes for self-catering.

The restaurant serves Karoo dishes like leg of lamb, lamb pie, and bobotie, with Greek salad and rice on the side. You can also order braai packs with wood supplied, and the farm store sells breakfast and other produce. A swimming pool sits in the gardens for cooling off after a day on the road. Children play on the lawn; pets are allowed for a fee.

The Shell Ultra City at Three Sisters is one kilometre north, handy for fuel and supplies. The Herholdt family has run the farm since 1989, and the butchery will ship large meat orders to Johannesburg or Cape Town.
