You eat at Fynkos inside Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, where tables sit among the fynbos and trees. The restaurant opened in 1924 and was rebuilt in 2003; it now serves breakfast, lunch and picnic platters from an on-site bakery that turns out scones, cinnamon buns and wholewheat bread through the day.

The kitchen prepares everything on site under supervision, with a menu that covers traditional dishes, vegetarian options and meals for children. Picnic platters can be ordered in advance or on the day — they come with BBQ chicken, falafel, quiche and cakes, packed to eat in the gardens. Groups of twenty-five or more can book buffets with forty-eight hours' notice.

South African residents get discounted entry to the gardens by showing ID. The restaurant closes on Christmas Day but is otherwise open daily. You can buy cookbooks from the restaurant's kitchen, with recipes from its own menu.
