Simonsig Family Vineyards, Cape Town South Africa

You visit Simonsig Family Vineyards for wine tastings and cellar tours in Stellenbosch, where the Malan family has been making wine since 1968. The estate is known for pioneering Cap Classique, South Africa's bottle-fermented sparkling wine, starting with Kaapse Vonkel in 1971. The tasting room offers flights of their Cap Classique, Cultivar Wines, and Family Selection Range.

The vineyards stretch across the Stellenbosch hills, with some plantings dating back decades. The cellar includes a modern fermentation area and aging rooms where you can see barrels of their flagship Tiara blend. In summer, the lawn under oak trees becomes an outdoor dining area for Cuvée Restaurant, which pairs local ingredients with Simonsig wines.

Third-generation winemaker Michael Malan now oversees production, continuing the family's focus on sustainable practices like solar power and water catchment systems. The farm has been Fairtrade certified, supporting fair wages and ethical working conditions. Visitors can join seasonal events like the winter concert series or Pinotage Day celebrations in October.

The estate remains family-owned, with Johan and Francois Malan still involved as directors. Their original 1960s cellar was one of the first private cold-fermentation facilities in the country.
