The Fat Mermaid
The Fat Mermaid is a Greek-inspired restaurant set beside a pool in Germiston, with whitewashed walls and deep blue umbrellas giving it an Aegean feel. You eat grilled meats — kafta, shawarma, lamb chops — or a Greek yiro filled with tzatziki and served with chips. The mixed grill platter comes with hummus, pita, and salad. Cocktails include a Turkish Delight with rosewater and pomegranate, and a Sunset Bikini with tropical rums and citrus.
The pool is part of the setting, with loungers for those who want to stay after eating. The place also has Little Mykonos, a set of whitewashed suites with private balconies overlooking the water. Families take the rooms with kitchens; all guests get breakfast at the restaurant.
String lights and hanging plants add to the evening atmosphere, when the place fills for birthdays and functions. The train does not stop here — you drive in, park free, and walk to a table by the water.
