You stay at Qwantani in one of fifty-three thatched chalets on the shore of Sterkfontein Dam, forty-three kilometres from Harrismith. Each chalet sleeps six, with three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a kitchen. The master bedroom has a queen bed; the others can be set as twins or a king. A fireplace warms the lounge on cold evenings, and the patio has a charcoal braai. Dogs are allowed in designated chalets, with walking trails and a fenced play area for them.

The resort sits where the Free State meets KwaZulu-Natal, with Golden Gate Highlands National Park forty-five minutes away by car. You can fish in the dam, which is among the cleanest in South Africa, or take a boat trip to Amanzi Bay. Quad bikes and guided 4x4 drives explore the surrounding foothills, and there are hiking trails to Vulture Rock and Bushman painting caves. Horse riding and archery are also available.

A pool and spa offer relaxation after outdoor activities. The Marshall Eagle Restaurant serves meals with dam views, and has a menu for dogs. Children can join the Fred First Kids Club for games and activities led by the resort’s blue mascot.

The chalets have Wi-Fi, undercover parking and DSTV. Some are wheelchair-accessible.
