You stay at Black Rhino Game Lodge in Pilanesberg National Park, malaria-free and home to the Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo. Morning and afternoon game drives go out with rangers and trackers, reading the bush for fresh spoor and radioing sightings across the concession.

The lodge sits in a private section of the park, quieter and less traveled than the main routes, so you often have sightings to yourself. Game drives go out early and late, when the animals are most active — mornings cold and sharp, afternoons golden — and walking safaris let you step closer, reading the tracks and signs.

The lodge itself is set in the bushveld, with suites overlooking the wilderness. Each suite has a private veranda, indoor and outdoor showers, and a minibar. The main lodge has a pool and a spa, and meals are served in the restaurant or the boma, an open-air dining area under the stars.

Pilanesberg is built on an ancient volcanic crater, and the lodge sits at its edge. The crater is the reason the park is here at all — its water draws the game, and its slopes shape the drives.
