Elephant Sanctuary Hartbeespoort, Hartbeespoort South Africa

The Elephant Sanctuary at Hartbeespoort Dam is a halfway house for African elephants, where you can meet them face to face. Guided interactions run three times daily, letting you touch their trunks, feed them, and walk beside them in their habitat. The morning session includes helping caretakers brush the elephants down.

Staff use positive reinforcement training, so the elephants are relaxed around visitors. You will learn about their anatomy and behavior from guides who explain how these animals are built and how they live. Flat shoes and sun hats are advised; cameras are welcome.

Tuskers B&B, a short walk away, has six air-conditioned rooms for overnight stays. The sanctuary also offers conference facilities in three spaces, including a wine cellar room for small groups. The elephants draw visitors, but the place works because it teaches you what they need to survive.

The sanctuary sits near Hartbeespoort Dam, where the water draws wildlife and cools the air.
