Grande Roche Hotel, Paarl South Africa

You stay at Grande Roche on a working wine farm at the foot of Paarl Rock, where Cape Dutch architecture meets vineyards. The estate holds eighteen thatched suites in groups of three, each with private terraces trailing vines. Five duplex Heritage Suites were converted from old workers' quarters, their names recalling Dutch colonial history: Java, Jasmijn, Batavia, Malabaar, Koljanner. Six Legacy Rooms occupy restored coach houses, with semi-private garden terraces facing the Drakenstein mountains.

The Garden Suite was once the farm stable, now with a king bed, double shower, spa bath, and enclosed patio. All rooms have air conditioning, satellite television, and tea trays. The Kraal Pool has a bar and treatment room by appointment.

Paths wind through manicured gardens to the Manor House, where breakfast and dinner are served daily, plus weekend lunches. Winnifred's Bar does all-day dining from ten to five: salads, toasties, coffee. The venue space has a water feature and views of Paarl Rock, used for weddings and conferences.

The train from Cape Town stops at Paarl station, fifteen minutes from the hotel by car.
