You eat at De Volkskombuis in cottages built in 1902 as housing for labourers on the Vredenburg farm, designed by Herbert Baker. The cottages were converted to a restaurant in 1968 by Historical Homes, fell into disrepair, and were restored again in 2016 by the Rupert family. The restaurant now occupies the same buildings on Aan-de-Wagenweg in Krigeville, a short distance from Stellenbosch's centre.

The cottages stand as they were built, with thick walls and low ceilings. The restoration was careful to preserve their character while making them fit for a working restaurant. The kitchen serves the area as it has for generations, updated to modern standards but keeping the historic feel of the place.

The restaurant is a working part of the town, not a museum piece. You come to eat in buildings that have served the area for over a century, with the same walls around you that stood in 1902.
