Bistro Sixteen82, Cape Town South Africa

You eat at Bistro Sixteen82 on Steenberg Farm in Constantia, where the dining room spills onto terraces beside reflective water features. The kitchen works with seasonal produce, serving breakfast, lunch and late-afternoon tapas that change with what grows nearby. Executive Chef Kerry Kilpin draws on global influences — particularly Thai flavours from time spent in Asia — but keeps the plates grounded in local ingredients.

The bistro sits adjacent to Steenberg’s winery, so the wine list leans heavily on the estate’s own bottles. You can taste them in the adjacent tasting room before or after your meal. The dining area looks out over indigenous gardens and the stone mountains that give Steenberg its name.

One project ties the kitchen directly to small-scale fishers along the Western Cape coast. Through a partnership with the ABALOBI initiative, certain fish dishes come with a QR code that traces the catch back to the individual fisher who landed it, showing where and how the fish was caught. These are often lesser-known local species like Cape Bream, chosen for their low impact on marine stocks.

The bistro opened in 2009, taking its name from the year Steenberg Farm was established. It serves through the day, from breakfast until late tapas in the evening.
