Cape to Cuba
Cape to Cuba is a Cuban restaurant on Kalk Bay’s harbour, serving Caribbean, Spanish and African flavours since 1999. You eat at wooden tables on sandy floors, with harbour views through the windows. The kitchen works with seafood from the docks nearby, and the bar has poured mojitos since opening — they were the first in South Africa to serve the drink.
The dining room is lined with Cuban memorabilia: vintage posters, trinkets, cigars and Panama hats. Live music plays monthly, and the Afro-Cuban beats drift through the room even on quiet nights. The cocktails use fresh ingredients, and the mojito remains the most ordered.
The Van Vuuren family opened the restaurant as a place where Kalk Bay’s fishing harbour could meet Havana’s rhythms. Twenty-five years on, the same family still runs it, and the same harbour still supplies the fish.
