Den Anker, Cape Town South Africa

You eat Belgian food at Den Anker on the V&A Waterfront, where the windows frame Table Mountain and the working harbour. The kitchen serves moules marinières, steak au poivre and bitterballen, finishing with house waffles and strawberries. The African Queen bar pours six Belgian beers on tap, including their house ale Anker Brew made to the founder's recipe, and Duvel served straight from the keg — a first for Africa. Twenty-five bottled Belgian beers stand behind the bar.

The restaurant opened in 1994 on the Pierhead, where the mountain meets the harbour. The terrace looks out over the water; inside, the windows run floor to ceiling. The menu stays close to Belgian tradition — mussels come first, then steak, then waffles — while the beer list ranges from fruit beers to tripels.

Den Anker supports local charities including the Bumble Bee Fund for children's mobility equipment and Ladles of Love, where they ran a soup kitchen during the pandemic. The founder's Belgian recipes still shape the beer and food, nearly thirty years on.
