Fish on the Rocks, Cape Town South Africa

You eat fish and chips at Fish on the Rocks from a yellow-and-red building on the rocks at Hout Bay harbour, with Chapmans Peak behind you and working fishing boats passing by. The shop opened in the 1980s, taking over a former fisherman’s supply store that had stood here since 1951. The kitchen fries hake, calamari and prawns to order, and the seagulls hover for scraps.

The harbour road ends at the shop, so you park and walk the last stretch past the wharf and the old West Fort Battery. Families take the big tables outside, where the view comes with the meal. The Naval Heritage site stands just up the slope, but most eyes stay on the water and the boats coming in with the catch.

The Broderick family have run the place for thirty years, and the loyal following includes locals and visitors who make the drive from across Cape Town. The shop closes when the fish runs out, which is why the early lunch is the surest bet.
