French Connection Bistro
You eat at French Connection Bistro on Huguenot Street in Franschhoek, where chef Matthew Gordon has been cooking since 2002. The menu leans French — mussels in white wine and cream, veal schnitzel with mushroom sauce, crème brûlée — but uses local ingredients like Franschhoek trout and Karoo lamb. Dishes change with what is fresh; the kitchen posts daily specials.
The bistro is small and busy, with tables inside and out. Chef Gordon trained in Johannesburg, London, and Tokyo before opening his first restaurant in Franschhoek at twenty-four. His team includes head chef Shirene Patrick, who started as a dishwasher at another of his restaurants twenty years ago.
The wine list leans local, as you would expect in the Winelands. The kitchen takes care with meat, aging steaks for at least two weeks before grilling them to order. They come with fries or vegetables, and you can choose sauces like béarnaise or garlic butter.
The bistro has been here long enough to feel settled in the village, with regulars among both locals and visitors.
