The Girls on the Square, Wilderness South Africa

You eat at The Girls on the Square in a garden in Wilderness, under trees that shade the tables. The kitchen is open, so you can watch the chefs work over the grill and pans. The menu leans on local produce — line fish from the coast, prawns, steaks, and curries — with a wine list built around South African vineyards.

The restaurant moved here in 2016 from a petrol-station site in the village, taking over a building with outdoor space for tables. Peter Pharoah’s artwork hangs inside, but most guests sit outside where the garden meets the square. The wine list has won awards, and the kitchen plates gin-tasting platters alongside the mains.

The place began as The Riverside Kitchen in 2001, run by two women chefs with an all-women kitchen team. Locals called it 'the Girls’, and the name stuck when they opened this spot. Now the tables fill with lunches that stretch into the afternoon, under the trees in the garden.
