You eat at The Rock on the cliffs above Hermanus harbour, looking back across Walker Bay to the village. The kitchen works from a blackboard menu that changes with the season — seafood, grill dishes, and a sushi counter — and the wine list leans on local vineyards. From June to November, southern right whales pass close enough to see from the windows.

The restaurant has been here since 1997, built for the view first and the kitchen second. The dining room takes the height of the cliff, so the harbour activity reads as part of the meal. Coffee comes from the bar that shares the same sightlines.

A separate space, The Gecko Bar, serves pizza and local craft gins with the same harbour view, plus live music and sport on screens. The Breakfast Room, added later, does morning meals and afternoon tea in a sunlit version of the same setting.

The Rock is built on the height it has. The cliff does the work.
